S.T. Aksakov's memorial estate (a branch of the national
museum of the Republic of Bashkortostan), which represents a pattern of wooden
architecture of the end of the XVIII century, is situated in a picturesque place of the
old city on the bank of the Belaya River. The house was built of Ural larch, and the
suite of rooms has been preserved till present. The family of the author lived here from
1795 to 1797. As "the family estate" the Aksakovs' Ufa house is known to the European
author by the book "The childhood of Bagrov-grandson", which was translated by James
Daffa in 1916.
The exposition of the memorial part of Aksakov's museum,
which reconstitutes the interior of the second half of the XVIII century, introduces the
history of Ufa and Ufa region, as well as "the family chronicles" of the
Zubovs-Aksakovs, showing how the city environment, the family and the way of life
influenced the writer's inner world. In the literary exposition of the museum there are
materials, which tell about Aksakov's period spent as a student in Kazan, about his
theater and critical activity, about the writer's creative work in the context of the
Russian literature of the XVIII - XIX centuries as well as about his environment. One of
the sections of the exposition is devoted to the life and activity of Konstantin and
Ivan Aksakov, who were the ideologists - Slavophiles. In the literary and musical
sitting room the interior of the governor's house of the second part of the XIX century
is represented. The documentary materials of this hall are connected with the activity
of S.T. Aksakov's son - Grigoriy, who was the governor of Ufa province in the middle of
the 60s. Before opening the museum there was a library of the trade union of the workers
in the sphere of education. The restoration began from the end of the 1980s.

It was presided by the author of the architectonic and restoration project Z.M.
Hatmullina. The project was realized by Moscow artist-architects E.N. Lavrova and V.S.
Taukina. The collecting of the exhibit as well as of the decorative and literary
material was accomplished by the workers of the museum E.D. Teregulova and T.E.
Zamatina. The museum was opened in 1991. That year was the year of 200 anniversary of
S.T. Aksakov and by the initiative of the international organization UNESCO, it was
declared "Aksakov's year". The fund of the museum comprises 1583 items. During these
years Aksakov's memorial estate has become a well-known social and cultural center not
only in Ufa and Bashkortostan, but abroad as well, first of all this is due to the
International Aksakov's festival. Every year the museum organizes Aksakov's days,
lecturing, exhibitions, literary and musical soirees, concerts of chamber music, Pancake
week and Christmas. The unique décor and atmosphere of the memorial estate is the
confirmation of that special position which it takes among the other "Aksakov's places",
which are closely connected with the name of the outstanding Russian writer of the XIX
century Sergey Timofeevich Aksakov.
